SMT Hosts Rosa International Middle School for “10 Feet to Character” Workshop

The girls’ basketball team of Rosa International Middle School in Cherry Hill, N.J., traveled to Drexel University on March 2 to take part in a “10 Feet to Character” workshop. The program, housed under the Drexel Sports Leadership Academy (DSLA), was developed to make a positive impact in the lives of young adolescents through a unique character-development curriculum using the fundamentals of basketball.

SMT alum Mike Mazzeo appeared on ESPN’s SportsCenter to discuss the future of the NJ Nets after they failed to land Carmelo Anthony. Mazzeo is a sports reporter for ESPNNewYork.com. While at Drexel's Goodwin College, he completed co-ops at Comcast Sportsnet and The Triangle.

An Evening with Women's Professional Soccer (WPS)

This Thursday, February 24, Drexel University's SMTSU will be hosting its first ever event- An Evening with Women's Professional Soccer. The event, which is taking place in Matheson 308 from 5:00-6:30 PM, will feature presentations from Philadelphia Independence GM Louise Waxler as well as a player or Head Coach Jim Gabarra from Sky Blue FC.

SMT Hosts Students of the Freire Charter School

Drexel Sport Management recently hosted local students of Philadelphia’s Freire Charter School. SMT professors Amy Giddings and Brett Burchette addressed nearly 20 students who are members of the Sport Club at the school and spoke to them about the field of sport management and pursuing a career in sport management. The goal of the afternoon event was to help cultivate the interests of the students in the sport industry.

On Wednesday, February 2nd, the New Jersey Nets of the National Basketball Association (NBA) hosted Drexel University Sport Management graduate students enrolled in SMT 611: Corporate Sponsorship in Sports for a pre-game corporate sponsorship & ticketing experience at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey. Professor Brett Burchette organized the trip as an experiential learning opportunity in the course.

As part of a course project, first-year Drexel Sport Management graduate students recently developed and implemented a kids club for the Drexel Athletics program. The “Drexel Junior Dragons Club” was created to increase awareness about Drexel Athletics and is geared towards children 12 and under to help them show their support for their favorite Drexel sports teams.

Drexel Sport Management and Playworks Team Up for "10 Feet to Character"

Drexel Sport Management and Playworks recently teamed up to provide a character education workshop to nearly 80 young girls who are part of the Playworks basketball league. The workshop – titled 10 FEET to CHARACTER (make link to webpage)– is a virtues and values program within Drexel’s Sports Leadership Academy (make link to DSLA webpage). The mission of this program is to make a positive impact in the lives of young adolescents through a special and unique character development curriculum built using the fundamentals from the sport of basketball.

First-Year SMT Grad Students Hold Business Card Social, November 2, 2010

On Tuesday, November 2, the Sports Industry Management (SMT 601) graduate class held its annual Business Card Social at Valanni in Center City. Each year, the students of this introductory class arrange the event as part of a class assignment in order to facilitate networking opportunities for students. Invited guests included first- and second-year grad students, Drexel Sport Management faculty and staff, and sport professionals from around the city.

Destination: South Africa!
Drexel Sport Management hosts 2010 FIFA World Cup Field Study, Summer 2010

Understanding the impacts of the world’s largest sporting event was the purpose of Drexel Sport Management’s Destination: South Africa! a field-study program that brought 13 Drexel University students to the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) 2010 World Cup. From June 10 through 25, Drexel students conducted interviews at World Cup stadia and fan parks in Cape Town and Durban to determine fan behaviors and impacts. Working side-by-side with African students from the University of KwaZulu-Natal in Durban and Cape Peninsula University of Technology (Cape Town), and with university students from Finland, hundreds of interviews were completed. Students also attended two World Cup matches: Switzerland v. Spain and Paraguay v. Italy.
