After most recently serving as a Division I athletic director at Long Beach State, Temple University and Northeastern University, and with a background of more than 17 years in college athletics administration as well as considerable experience as a sports attorney, I enjoy being able to share my experiences and contacts with aspiring sport management professionals as Director of Sport Management here at Drexel University. Whether it is on campus or out in the city of Philadelphia, it’s rewarding to be in such a unique and distinctive learning environment where excitement is always in the air!
It truly is an exciting time to be attending Drexel. The University continues to have tremendous momentum in building its reputation both locally and nationally. Likewise, Goodwin College took on new leadership with the appointment of Dean William Lynch in 2007. Dean Lynch has a very clear vision and ambitious plans for the Sport Management program and is instrumental in helping to position our program both locally and nationally to reflect the mission of the University. Our program has made great strides since its inception in 2003, including the addition of a graduate program both on campus and online, and with tremendous support for future growth, will continue to develop and evolve in the years to come.
Philadelphia sports exude excitement. For the sports enthusiast, there is no better city to live and work in than Philadelphia. Known for the extreme passion fans have for its sports, Philadelphia is home to a wide array of prominent, reputable, and nationally renowned sport properties and enterprises making it a great place to study and learn about sport and its culture.
It is also a very exciting time to be in the business of sport. The industry is booming and the opportunities are both varied and challenging. Working within the sport industry is a great way to turn your avocation (sports) into your vocation; but, rest assured it is a business and to be successful you need to be focused, prepared and hard working.
Get set to catch all the excitement as you “take the field” of sport management at Drexel University! And as always, we look forward to helping you prepare for that exciting and rewarding career in the sports industry.
Dave O’Brien, J.D.
