As the Drexel Men’s Basketball team was victorious over James Madison University in their final home game of the 2011-2012 regular season last week, Drexel’s Sports Leadership Academy was also hosting the last 10 Feet to Character Workshop for the season, which coincides with the University’s basketball schedule each year.
10 Feet to Character is a values and virtues-based program within Drexel Sport Management’s Sports Leadership Academy. The mission of the program is to make a positive impact in the lives of young adolescents through a special and unique character development curriculum, built using fundamentals of basketball. The program gets its name from the standard measurement of 10 feet between the floor and the rim of the basket, and was created on the principle that good moral character is founded upon a collection of values and virtues that are recognizable and practiced.
The 10 Feet to Character workshop on Feb. 22 hosted youth players from Our Mother of Consolation Parish School’s 8th grade boys’ basketball team, and their coach, Wayne Trueheart. Mentoring adults from Drexel University and the Sport Management program (coaches, athletes, and faculty) assisted the students in heightening their understanding and application of the principles that define good character. Students of the program worked their way through all 10 feet of values and virtues, as they learned about good moral character on and off the court. After the workshop, the program culminated in a celebration of basketball as participants were treated to a pizza party and giveaway items. Coach Trueheart’s team also had the opportunity to see an exciting Drexel men’s basketball game, as they watched the Dragons defeat JMU and clinch the number one seed in the CAA Tournament!
The Sport Management program launched the Drexel Sports Leadership Academy in 2008, and has hosted many youth sports groups for the 10 Feet to Character Workshops since its inception. Coach Trueheart was very pleased with what his 8th grade boys’ team took from the experience, and was enthusiastic about working with Drexel Sport Management to arrange for more OMC teams to take part in the future.
