In 2005, Drexel’s Construction Management (CMGT) faculty, together with key construction industry leaders from the Philadelphia region, launched the Drexel Construction Management Advisory Council (CMAC) to strengthen Drexel’s CMGT program and broaden its reach. Through the CMAC, the University forges an alliance with its construction industry partners to provide a network of support for the CMGT program and more importantly, our students.
Specific purposes and objectives of the CMAC include:
The Drexel CMAC is comprised of dedicated industry professionals that support the program in various ways. The CMAC presently includes 21 construction organizations referred to as Partners for the Future. An industry-led Executive Committee guides the CMAC. The current chair is Joseph P. McAtee, COO, Urban Engineers, Inc. and vice chair is John J. Donnelly, CEO, L.F. Driscoll. Currently, there are nine industry members serving on the Executive Committee. There are four standing subcommittees dedicated to the mission of the CMAC under the direction of the Executive Committee:
The purpose of the Outreach Committee is to promote Drexel’s CMGT program by increasing the visibility within and among various groups including the regional and national construction industry, professional and trade associations, construction education community, secondary school educators/guidance counselors, and most importantly prospective students. A collateral objective of this committee is to improve and enhance construction industry image.
The purpose of the Curriculum Committee is to assist the faculty in curriculum development consistent with the American Council for Construction Education (ACCE) guidelines and industry needs. The role of this committee includes supporting activities required to secure and maintain ACCE accreditation. The Curriculum Committee also identifies and recommends viable specialization or concentration options for inclusion within the CMGT program. The Curriculum Committee also assists in gathering and evaluating feedback from graduates and employers of graduates of the CMGT program.
Resource Development Committee
The purpose of the Resource Development Committee is to develop and implement strategies to secure external funding for the benefit of the CMGT program including scholarships, endowments, and student enhancement programs. This committee operates within the University’s institutional guidelines regarding resource development.
The purpose of the Membership Committee is to recommend new members to the CMAC and its various subcommittees. The Membership Committee identifies prospective members to fill the various subcommittee position openings identified by the Executive Committee. The Membership Committee provides a list of candidates to the Executive Committee for final consideration and appointment. The members of this committee are comprised solely of Executive Committee members.
The Executive Committee generally meets four times per year with the subcommittees above meeting as necessary. Regular events open to the general membership include a Networking Reception in the Fall and Awards Reception in the winter/spring. These events are excellent opportunities for the CMAC industry partners to become acquainted with CMGT students, and vice versa. The events also serve to expand the Drexel CMGT community in that alumni and others from the University frequently attend these events. CMAC regularly sponsors or underwrites various student activities including CMAA Student Chapter events, and others.
